Eyelid surgery, which is also known as blepharoplasty, is one of the most common procedures performed by cosmetic surgeons. Dr. Kherani is an Ophthalmic Cosmetic Surgeon serving Vancouver, Burnaby and the Lower Mainland.
This treatment is designed to reduce sagging upper eyelids and puffy bags below the eyes, as well as excess skin and wrinkles from the upper and/or lower eyelids. Blepharoplasty can be both a functional and cosmetic surgical procedure, intended to reshape the upper eyelid or lower eyelid. This is done by removing or repositioning excess tissue, as well as by reinforcing surrounding muscles and tendons.
Dr. Kherani has specialized oculoplastic training in these procedures and performs laser assisted and unassisted blepharoplasty. Dr. Kherani and the Heights Laser Centre can educate you on the procedures and treatments that would be best suited to your individual needs.
How Eyelid Surgery Procedures Work
The eye surgery is performed under local anaesthesia. Skin incisions are made in hidden creases, and may be combined with an incision on the inside of the eyelid. If the lower eyelids are being operated on, Dr. Kherani may proceed with a transconjunctival blepharoplasty, when excess skin does not need to be removed. This procedure entails a small incision only on the inside of the lower eyelid. This allows the removal of a fat pocket in the lower eyelid and prevents any visible scar, while still producing the desired outcome.
The surgical procedure can take from one to two hours, depending upon the complexity of the surgery. Please arrange for someone to drive you home after the procedure. There are no bandages, tape or dressings in the recovery period. Icing the eye area is important to reduce swelling. Frozen peas layered over a cool wet washcloth or gauze is effective and recommended as much as possible for the first two days. Keeping the head elevated at night will help with swelling.
What to Expect with Eyelid Surgery Procedures
Most people will be back to normal between 7-12 days after the procedure. Eyelid incisions heal beautifully, and are amongst the most forgiving incisions used in any form of cosmetic surgery. The results can last up to 10 years.
